Create an IoT-based Smart Collar Digital Tool, Lecturers and Students of ASEAN’s Best Private University Help Increase Cattle Growth Productivity at CV Sapi Sport

Lecturers and Students of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia (FTIK UTI) created a tool for monitoring the health and growth of IoT-based cattle, named the Digital Smart Collar. This innovation is a new technology in the field of animal husbandry that can help cattle farmers to monitor the health condition of cows and cow growth.

The technology created is one of the outputs of the Vocational Product Research funded by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. This research is proposed in 2021 and carried out in 2022-2023. The implementing team for this research activity is Dr.Si. Dedi Darwis, M. Kom. (Chief Researcher and Deputy Dean 1 of FTIK UTI), and Selamet Samsugi, M.Eng. (Lecturer of S1 Computer Engineering FTIK UTI) As a member of the research. This research also involved 3 undergraduate students of Computer Engineering FTIK UTI as the implementation of MBKM Research activities in 2022.

This technology is built using the MAX30102 sensor to monitor the cow’s heart rate and the MLX90614 sensor to detect the cow’s body temperature and several other components. All components are packaged together in one small box which will be put around the neck of the cow.

The tool is connected to IoT which is made in the form of an Android application interface. The Digital Smart Collar will provide information about the cow’s heart rate and body temperature in real-time for each cow that is worn by this tool. Aat will give a warning via the android application if there are cows whose body temperature is above normal, which is more than 38 degrees Celsius and if the heart rate beats above the average, which is 55 to 80 beats per minute, the tool will also provide a warning via the android application. . This tool can help reduce the number of Cattle Mouth and Nail Disease (FMD) which is currently booming in Indonesia, because this tool will help in the first step when there are cows whose body temperature and heart rate are not normal. In addition, this technology is also used to monitor the weight growth of cows automatically. Every time a cow is weighed, the data will automatically be entered into the application so that it will be easier to control the weight growth of the cow in real-time.

The tool has been tested since August 18, 2022 to Research Partners, namely CV Sapi Sport, which is located in Tanjung Bintang, South Lampung Regency. Fendi Periawan as the owner of CV Sapi Sport expressed his gratitude to the lecturers and students of FTIK UTI who have helped facilitate monitoring of cow health and cattle growth on his farm. Fendi hopes that this tool can increase the productivity of his cattle growth and hopes that there will be more technology from FTIK UTI that can be applied to CV Sapi Sport.

Vice Rector of Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia Dr.H. Mahathir Muhammad, SE., MM. Appreciate the research work of lecturers and students that have been created and can be implemented to help the community. Mahathir said that this was in line with the competence of one of the study programs at FTIK UTI, namely the Bachelor of Computer Engineering in utilizing IoT for the community. Mahathir hopes that apart from CV Sapi Sport, this tool can also be implemented for other livestock businesses in Lampung Province.
