Rector of UNIDA Gontor delivered a talk for Indonesian Muslim community in London

LONDON – On Sunday, 12 March 2023, a delegation from the University of Darussalam Gontor (UNIDA Gontor) delivered a general talk for Indonesian Muslim community at the Indonesian Islamic Center (IIC) London as part of the university’s international community service programmes.

Today’s talk was delivered by Prof Dr KH Hamid Fahmy Zarkasyi, accompanied with his wife, Mrs. Emira Iffat, and Royyan Ramdhani Djayusman, a lecturer at UNIDA Gontor who is currently pursuing a PhD programme in London.

The talk was initiated and organised by various Indonesian Muslim community in London, including Pengajian Al-Ikhlash, Al-Hidayah, the embassy of the republic of Indonesia, PPI UK and London, and Doctrine UK.

Furthermore, Prof Hamid was warmly welcomed by key trustees at IIC London, as the main organiser of this event, Mr Djamal Djamalulail (General Secretary), Mr Berry Natalegawa (Vice Chairman), Mr KH Hamim Syaaf (Advisory board member), Mr Eko Kurniawan (Head of Masjid Development Committee), Mrs Elvi Ibrahim (Trustee), Mrs Sutjiningsih (Trustee), Mrs Yuni Hansudi (Secretary), Mr Ruly Achdiat (Property Team), Mr Yorga Permana (Fundraiser Team), Mr Dwi Prayitno (Property Team), Mrs Aida Purwanto (Fundraiser Team), and Mr Adi Purwanto (Husband of Mrs Aida).

During the talk, Prof Hamid explained the importance of ibadah as self purification process. Meaning that, daily ibadah such as syahadat, shalat, zakat, shaum, and hajj, should build a strong foundation for Iman, and finally, Ihsan.

The talk is the first big event organised at the IIC Masjid since it has been legally purchased on 25 February 2023, said Mr Eko Wahyu, as the chief of fundraising for the Masjid. In addition, this event is an opening for series of events which has been planned during the Ramadan, he added, inshaAllah.

All in all, the event is an implementation of international collaboration between UNIDA Gontor and IIC London as part of community service project from the university. Hopefully, in the near future, the university will delegate it’s alumni and lectures as da’i and imam to serve the Muslim community in London and neighbouring cities in the United Kingdom.
