International Guest Lecture on Mawarith Studies: The Urgency of Mawarith Knowledge

UNIDA Gontor – On December 21, 2023, the Faculty of Sharia at University of Darussalam (UNIDA) Gontor collaborated with the Centre of Mawarits (CMS) to organize the event “International Guest Lecture on Mawarith Studies.” The event commenced at 08:30 and took place in the Multimedia Hall on the 3rd floor of the main building at UNIDA Gontor, both physically and virtually. The distinguished guests included Prof. Dr. K.H. Hamid Fahmy Zarkasyi, M.A.Ed., M.Phil., the Rector of UNIDA Gontor, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Imam Kamaluddin, M.Hum., the Dean of the Faculty of Sharia at UNIDA Gontor.

The objective of the International Guest Lecture on Mawarith Studies was to impart an understanding of the importance of Mawarith knowledge to the students of UNIDA Gontor. The theme for the event was “The Dynamics of Contemporary Mawarith in Some ASEAN Countries,” providing a platform for leading thinkers in the field of Islamic inheritance to share knowledge and experiences from various Southeast Asian nations.

The first speaker was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Bari bin Awang from the International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM), followed by the second speaker, Awang Haji Hayatuddin bin Haji Moksin from Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, Brunei Darussalam. This made the event attractive to participants from external campuses, including Universitas Muhammadiyah, Ponorogo, IAIN Ponorogo, INSURI Ponorogo, IARM Ponorogo, and UIN SATU Tulungagung.

The opening ceremony was filled with the enthusiasm of the participants and marked by warm remarks from the Rector of UNIDA Gontor, Prof. Dr. K.H. Hamid Fahmy Zarkasyi, M.A.Ed., M.Phil. He expressed high hopes for the success of the event in enhancing and contributing to the development of Mawarith knowledge in Indonesia. Additionally, he explained that the study of Mawarith could be interconnected with other fields such as the knowledge of endowments (wakaf).

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Imam Kamaluddin, M.Hum., the Dean of the Faculty of Sharia, emphasized the urgency of Mawarith knowledge and the essence of wealth. “Wealth essentially belongs to Allah; when humans pass away, it returns to Allah and is distributed to the rightful heirs through the knowledge of Mawarith,” he stated. The discussion and the Q&A session were interactive, with participants actively engaging to delve deeper into the concepts discussed.

The event concluded with the exchange of mementos and a group photo session.
